As an important component of our support for our key skin care customers, we have held annual two or three day conferences for each of our key skin care brands for many years. These have usually also incorporated personal and business development sessions as well as professional education. An important component of these has been the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and experiences with fellow therapists from all over New Zealand. They have been held in interesting and enjoyable venues, in places such as Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamner Springs, Taupo, Waikato, Rotorua, Wairarapa, Queenstown, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Terrace Downs, and even Sydney. Because at the time there had been no national industry conventions for many years, in 1999 we launched our own Self Care National Beauty Therapy Conference. It was a most successful weekend in Rotorua in 1999 and attended by 110 delegates from all over New Zealand. The feedback from delegates was that this was the best conference any had ever attended, and fervent requests were received for further conferences. We made the decision to offer this event on a biennial basis. The 2001 Biennial Self Care National Beauty Therapy Conference was held at the Formosa Country Club, on the Eastern shores of Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, over the weekend 7-9 July. Resident delegates enjoyed the comfort of luxury chalet style accommodation. The conference centre provided an excellent venue for the five overseas presenters brought to the event by Self Care. Clearly the excitement and enthusiasm generated in Rotorua (and a venue in the large Auckland market) helped encourage a dramatic increase in attendance to 197... without doubt the largest ever gathering of beauty therapists in New Zealand. The Conference Theme was "Grow Your Future". The goal was to provide delegates not only with an extra motivational lift, but also practical 'tools' for immediate improvement in personal, professional, and business success.
In the previous year we had been fortunate to attend an all-day seminar in Sydney, which excited us more than any beauty therapy industry presentation that we had been to for many years, anywhere in the world. The presenter, Nina Curtis, could have inspired an audience from any industry. What made it so special for us (and the audience of beauty therapists) was that here was someone who not only inspired, but who “walked the talk”. We were delighted that Nina Curtis accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker at the 2003 Self Care National Beauty Therapy Conference in Queenstown. In fact, she said,"I am very excited about being a part of your programme. It sounds great and I believe that I can truly meet your needs." And so it proved.
It takes a special kind of person to keep a large group captivated from early morning until late afternoon. Nina's energy, her obvious passion about her subject and our industry, her ability to communicate ideas and illustrate them with meaningful examples from her own experience, her warmth and inclusiveness combine to make her one of the best presenters we have experienced. In 2005 we brought the conference to the classy Spencer on Byron, in Auckland's Takapuna. With easy (and inexpensive) air access from all over New Zealand we anticipated and had a very high participation level. Further, to help everyone get the very best out of the conference, wherever they came from, we subsidised the cost heavily to make it possible for everyone to stay at the hotel and to enjoy the social and professional interaction this afforded. In 2007, to avoid clashing with an industry trade show, we had special individual events. Our Decléor customers had the opportunity for a trip to Paris, with a programme of activities from and as valued guest of Decléor of Paris. Over 30 salon owners and staff participants had a most exciting trip (See the Spring 2007 Communiqué). Joyce Blok customers gathered in Rotorua for a refreshing mix of outdoor activities (Skyline luge), educational presentations and sessions, and a Gala Awards Dinner evening (See the Spring 2007 Communiqué). In 2008 we brought the schedule back in line with a fantastic late autumn weekend in the beautiful lakes district around Queenstown. Our Venue was the world renown Millbrook Resort, close to Arrowtown. For more information and images click the link button in the menu left.
